American Dream, Immigration and Hardship

American Dream, Immigration and Hardship

Dr. M. Abdul Mottaleb: It is a pleasure to write a brief note about untold realities of American dream, immigration and hardship deriving from my past 17 years US experience. Irrespective of race and color, USA is a melting pot of nationalities, cultures and ethnicities. Although American concepts, values and opportunities are changing continuously, lion portion of world population always focus to imagine the insight of the US abundant prospects. To reach such a dream, people immigrate to the USA through professional, skilled worker, student, family, asylum, religious, investors, DV categories (https://www.uscis.gov/greencard).

Additionally, millions of people enter to the melting pot as undocumented immigrant. Occasionally, students cannot keep good academics; as a result, they turn into illegal status. Those illegal/undocumented people suffer over decades and sometimes they get legalized through amnesty or marriage to American citizen. Knowing all immigration concerns, people access to the USA with high risk and paramount dream. When a professional enters to USA with family immigrant visa or DV, he/she starts dreaming very high and attempts to adjust environment years to decade living with unpredictable future. Giving multiple years constant efforts, some DV/family immigrants can manage professional job, majorities engage in non-professional roles working hard overnight and tear water in numerous stores, street, restaurants, cabs etc. against their will and driving force for better education and opportunities of children. After looking such miserable scene, many professionals return to their own country and stay in job there leaving children in USA for higher education. Unfortunately, majority of such guardian less children derail from education path to street job. For asylum and religious immigrant seekers, they suffer unthinkable immigration pain with high order of magnitude compared to family immigrant or DV. In a capitalist/corporate society, investor’s immigrant enjoys mostly cheerful time because of their inheritance resources. Although little hardship at early stage, persons who get education in USA schools e.g. student visa holder, they enjoy better life later and get professional job in fast pace. Moreover, students experience the western culture and they can adjust and adapt the US environment and also get permanent immigration visa approval within short time. In general, the professional and skilled workers run with non-immigrant J1 or H1-B visa status, they are always in high work pressure until she/he gets immigrant visa approval either through employer or independent categories. During J1 or H1-B status, if a person lost job for any reasons and stayed unemployed more than 28 days, he/she will be illegal immediately. Once illegal, they will be treated same way like other illegal immigrant. To keep their status valid, only available option is hard work. Thus, enormous work-load, stress and pressure come to them, sometimes, falling deleterious health effects in workplace or afterword. Generally, professionals earn good compensation which is enough to support family members’ healthcare, education and social events. Although non-professional workers get inadequate salary, state and federal government extend partial support to smooth the lifestyle of legal immigrant/citizen. All workers enjoy full dignity, respect, transparency and security in everywhere.
